Expert meeting regarding old growth forests in Bulgaria

An expert meeting regarding conceptual problems with the identification of territories for ensuring old-growth forests in Bulgaria was held on 5 December 2014 in Rila Hotel, Sofia.

The meeting, organized under the auspices of WWF Danube-Carpathian Program Bulgaria, was attended by nearly 30 experts from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Forestry Enterprises, the Forestry University in Sofia, the Forest Research Institute – BAS, nature conservation organizations, companies, free lance foresters, expert etc.

During the meeting, up-to-date experience with the identification of old-growth forests in Bulgaria was presented and the main challenges with regard to this were discussed. In additions, steps for addressing these challenges were shared in view of implementing the legal requirements for setting aside old-growth forests, so that commercial activities are excluded in these for the future.

The meeting was organized with the expert support of PDM Services Ltd.

The interactive map was developed by PDM Services Ltd. under a project implemented by Novo Badeshte za Dospat Association with the financial support of Operational Programme for the Bulgarian Fisheries.

The website contains information for the most popular tourist routes and sites on the territory of FLAG High Western Rhodopes: Batak-Devin-Dospat together with GPS data for all objects available for download.
